Russian Brotherhood Organisation ceremonial ribbon

Front and back view of St Nicholas Russian Brotherhood Organisation ceremonial ribbon. The top clip had pins along both margins. Thus, it could be flipped over so that both sides of the ribbon could be used. The black backside was intended for use at funerals.

Each member of a brotherhood had a membership number. These membership numbers were used very frequently for such purposes as identifying members on lists, both on lists of informal notational character and more official lists printed in Rusyn language newspapers. The heavy emphasis on membership numbers was undoubtedly intended to assist those with poor reading skills. Ribbons such as the one above were individually printed and included the member's number. The pictured ribbon belonged to member 102.
