Voters! How Long Are You Going to Stand for These Royal Families?
(Political Cartoon)
Voters! Put a Stop to All This by Voting the People's Ticket - the Non-Partisan Ticket
RUSSIN - HAYES - FLEMING - HIRKO - FELLI
In 1929, Shivell and Walsh set out to oust Thomas James and Sam Dominick from office. The following is a reproduction of an ad they had published in the Sunday Independent, in the August 8, 1929 issue:
"It isn't necessary to take a trip abroad to get a glimpse at royalty. Right here in our own township we have royal families in politics who have become so domineering that only members of their households are good enough for King Tom and Premier Sam. The only hitch to this condition is that we are living in a free country, where all are supposed to be equal and the people have the final say as to whether royal families will dominate the politics of this or any other township. The people will speak in November and royal families will tumble like all royal families in the past. History will repeat itself. The people will throw off the shackles of King Tom and Premier Sam and bury them politically. The peoples' champions - Shivell - Walsh - Goobic - will sweep into office. Vote the royalty out, and clean-cut, upright men into office."
The article above is an exact reproduction of an article sponsored (missing text) Goobic on (missing text) column.
How times have chanced. In 1929 Shivell called James and Dominick royalty. As in History, kingdoms fell and in their place arose dictatorships. We now have Dictator Shivell, the ruler of all Plains. Under him we have Dictator Walsh, Dictator Kascinski and Dictator Goobic. The people fought and bled in 1929 to rid the town of men who were accused of loading the payroll with their families. Why, conditions under James and Dominick can not even be compared with conditions under Shivell and Walsh. Let us take a look at some of their immediate families.

Not bad! 11 out of 17 holding political jobs. Add up the income for yourself and see if politics pay the Walsh family. Too bad that these men cannot get their wives jobs and then all could work. With this Mike is going about the town preaching the people of Plains owe him the Tax Collectorship - a $10,000 a year job.
John Goobic, 8 years Commissioner.
John Goobic, $1,950, Sub Assessor.

FIVE IN SHIVELL FAMILY - FIVE WORKING IN POLITICS.
Now, this is what you fought and bled for in 1929. People of the town, it is time to awake. Look over this list and you can see why these men want to remain in control of the political affairs of the town. They are not worrying that policemen, firemen and teachers have not had a pay on time in years. It pays these men to be in office. Does it pay you to keep them in office while they continue to feather their nests? Awake! Things will change on November 4th when the people speak. The Dictator's ticket, will be out and the people's ticket, the Non-Partisan ticket will come in. Pull the first lever.
